The role of father and mother in child’s life

Children of an early age identify themselves with their parents, mostly with the one of identic sex. They copy their expressions, they take over their attitudes and values. They adopt their behavior and their way of solving problems. Children tend to identify themselves with the person who are emotionally close to them. They want to keep their love and their shelter.

The change of homosexuals possible

Dr. Spitzer, the currant Director of Biometrics Research and the Profesor of Psychiatry at Columbia University, is famous since 1973 when he contributed to exclude homosexuality from the list of diagnosis of illneses. He decided later on to explore whether homosexuality really unchangeble is. In his study that was presented since 9 May, 2001 at every meeting of APA Dr. Spitzer said about his discoveries: ´Like the most psychiatrists I also thought that the homosexual behavior can be resested but can not be changed. But I do believe now that this is untrue – some people can change and they do charge.´ He interviewed 200 subjects (143 men and 57 women) who were willing to describe their sexual and emotional histories including their change from homosexual to heterosexual orientation. According to him ´on the contrary to the common oppinion some of the highly motivated person that really try, they are able to change and live heterosexual.´ He also said that he does not want to suggest that every homosexual should undertake a therapy but every person who wants it should have the right to discover their heterosexual potential.

Robert L. Spitzer, possibility of homosexual orientation change

In May 2001, at the American Psychiatric Association annual meeting, psychiatrist Robert L. Spitzer announced the results of a new study on the possibility of homosexual orientation change. The study provoked a dicussion on ethical and medical substantiation of reorientation therapy. In this article, I briefly describe Spitzer’s research and its consequences. The results suggest, in contrast with traditional view, that some highly motivated individuals can make substantial changes in multiple indicators of sexual orientation, using different methods, and achieve good heterosexual functioning. Although certain response bias might have occured, it is unlikely it could explain all reported changes. Psychotherapy should respect personal autonomy to make non-medical values decision. Therefore, ego-dystonic homosexuals, distressed by their same-sex attraction and requested reorientation therapy, should have a possibility to undergo it. Spitzer’s results must not be misused to justify forced treatment of homosexuality. However, patients have the right to minimize their unwanted feelings and to develope their heterosexual potential (Ref. 16).

This longitudinal study tries to answer two of the most contentious and disputed questions of our day: Is change of homosexual orientation possible at all? Is the attempt to this change harmful? From 98 people 33 reported positive change. No evidence of movement toward increased distress or other evidence of harm were found.

Emotionally Absent Fathers

This study explored emotionally absent fathers as one variable in understanding of homosexuality. Results lend new credence to the „weak father“ theory of homosexuality and to the importance of same-sex emotional connectedness in the psychosexual gender development of individuals.

Homosexuality: The Ethical Challenge

The author examined about 850 male homosexuals in psychiatric consultation. In not a single case was there a good father- son relationship. In most cases, the mother was overly close, intrusive and demasculinizing. If one were to choose any single criterion on which to base a prognosis for change, it is the degree of pathology of the father-son relationship.

Spitzer: Sexual and gender identity disorders + inclusion of GID

The author sees the paper as raising the issue of whether there are any cases for which sexual and gender identity diagnoses are appropriate. The central issue is how does one decide that something is just unusual (normal variation) or something is disordered (pathological).
